FASHION TERMINOLOGY
Fashion involves and is important to know many specific Fashion and apparel terms.
High fashion
fashion are the famous, popular latest or newest fashion. They are usually of top quality with fine workmanship and grateful, nice fabric. Because of the quality, they are costly. High Fashion styles originate from top popular fashion designers in leading Fashion cities.
Designer label
Designer label are not only restricted to the fashion industry. Many people consider designer labels to be a status symbol. Designer label dresses is very costly and they are branded.
They are expensive.
Ex. Gucci, Chanel, and Alexander, McQueen are derived from the companies founding designer, while others do not directly refer to the company's founder: for example, Miu, and Chloe may be referred to as designer label.
What is Accessories ?
An extra item that is added to something and is useful or attractive but not of great importance. Articles worn ( like jewelry/hat/shoes/belts etc) or carried (e.g. purse etc ) to complete a fashion look.
*Alteration
The act of altering or making different. To make change to a piece of clothing. A small change in somebody/something.
*Apparel
Clothing sold in shops. clothing not necessarily fashionable.
*Asymmetrical
Having part or aspects that are not same or equivalent ; unequal.
*Atelier (ah-tel-yay)
The French term for fashion workshop.
*Avant Grade(avant-garde)
French term for a design which is uncoventional and ahead of it's time.
*Attire
Attire is just a formal way to say "outfit". Attire means clothing of a distinctive style for a particular occasion.
*Bespoke
English term for made-to-measure, made for a particular customer or user.
*Bias
In the diagonal direction of the cloth. A line diagonal to the grain of a fabric.
*Boutique (boo-teek)
French word for a small shop with unusual clothing and accessories.
*Brand
A symbol, marks, words or phrase that identifies and differentiates a product, service form its competitors.
A Brand is name, term, design, symbol or any other feature that identifies one seller's good or service as distinct from those of other sellers.
*Classic
Classic Fashion is a style that stays in fashion for a long period of time.
*Costume
A set or style of clothes worn by people in a particular country or in a particular historical period.
( Dress based on a theme or story )
*Chic
Smart elegance and sophistication especially of dress or manner : , Stylish or smart.
*Conceptual
Based on a concept.
Ex. Process by which students learn how to organize information in logical mental structures.
*Contemporary
Current; the new look of today.
Things that are contemporary are either happening at the same time or happening now (current).
*Couture ( koo-tour)
Refers to unique and exclusive creations of fashion customized for individual clients, since the design is never duplicate.
*Consumer
The end user who makes the decision to purchase.
A consumers is a person who pays to consume the good an/or services produced seller.
*Costume jewellery
Inexpensive jewellery or imitation jewellery. Jewellery made with inexpensive materials or imitation gems.
*Collection
A group of garments design for a specific season.
*Custom-made
Apparel made to a customer's special order. Also called bespoke tailoring. suits, dresses etc design and made for a particular person.
*Couturier (koo-tu-ree-air)
French term used for male designer.
A person or company that designs, makes, and sells expensive fashionable clothing.
*Couturiere (koo-tu-ree-aire)
French term used for female designer.
*Dart
V shapetucks for fitting of a garment.
Ex. Dash, rush, run, bolt, break, charge, race, sprint, dive, swoop, gallop, scurry, scamper, stamped, scramble, start, flight etc.
*Draping
A technique of pattern making without paper. Clothing, personal Arts & Crafts/Textiles) the way in which fabric hangs.
*Design
The arrangement of visual and functional elements of an object into on 7aesthetic whole. Design is the creation of a plan or convention for the construction of an object or a system (as in architectural blueprints, engineering drawings, business process, circuit diagram, and sewing patterns). Design has different connotations is different fields.
*Ethnic/flood costume
Traditional, national or regional dress. Afolk costume expresses an identity through costume, which is usually associated with a geographic area or a period of time in history. It can also indicate social, marital or religious status.
*Ensemble (a-sahm-bl)
Complete set of apparel and accessories that form one single outfit.
All the part is considered only in relation to the whole.
*Ease
Extra allowance in a garment to avoid skin fit.
For example, if a man has a 40-inch chest measurement, a jacket with a 40-inch chest would be very tight and would constrickt movement......Ease is not generally include in sizing measurements.
*Empire waist
This waistline begains just below the bust.
Empire silhouette, empire line, empire waist or just empire empire is a style in clothing in which the dress has a fitted bodice ending just below the bust, giving a high-waisted appearance, and a gathered skirt which is long and loosely fitting but skims the body rather than being supported by voluminous petticoats.
*Fabric
A cloth which is made up fibers by weaving, knitting, fitting etc.
Cloth used by knitting or other techniques and made into clothing, decoration, art, etc.
*Fad
Short - lived fashion that peaks and fades out quickly.
*Fashion
The style or styles that are most popular at a given time.
Fashion is a term commonly used to describe a style of clothing worn by most people.
*Fashion cycle
A period of time or life span. during which the Fashion exists, moving through the five stages from introduction through obsolescence.
*Fashion forecast
A specialized activity to predict Fashion for the next season.
Fashion forecasting is a global career that focuses on upcoming trends.
*Fray
The Norse god of fertility, crops, peace, and prosperity.
*Glitterati
Highly fashionable, rich, and famous celebrities.
*Gore
Vertical division of garment. A small usually triangular piece of land. A tapering or triangular piece (as of cloth in a skirt).
*Godet
A tringular piece of fabric inserted upward in a garment, to make it flared or for ornamentation.
*Gusset
A triangular piece of fabric inserted into a seam to add breadth or reduce stress from tight fitting clothes.
*Haute couture
(French word for 'high fashion' design house). Literally, while haute means high. These are garments created as one off pieces for a specific client.
*Hue
Technical term of colour .
*Hemline
(The lowest finished edge of a garment). The hemline is the line formed by the lower edge of a garment, such as a skirt, dress or coat, measured from the floor.
*Interlining
Layer between the outer fabric and garment's lining.
*Junk jewellery
Imitation jewellery ; fun accessories.
*Knock-off
(A less expensive copy of a higher priced style). A copy that sells for less than the original broadly: a copy or imitation of someone or something popular.
*Lingerie
(Women's undergarment). It's mean women's underwear or nightwear or nightclothes. Lingerie as a word was first used to refer to underwear and Bras in 1922.
*Lining
Inner layer of garment.
*Merchandise
(Salable product) Merchandising is the promotion of goods and/or service that are available for retail sale.
*PrĂȘt-a-porter
(French word for ready-to-wear Fashion). means ready to wear clothes based on haute couture designs.
*Ready-to-wear
(Apparel that is mass produced). Ready-to-wear is clothing sold "off the rack", meaning that it is made in standardized sizes, is usually mass-produced and is meant to be purchased and worn immediately, often our alteration.
*Silhouette
(Outer shape of any object garment). The dark solid shape of something seen against a light background.
*Selvedge
(Woven edge of the fabric). an edge product on woven fabric during manufacture that prevents it from unravelling.
*Seem Allowence
Margin between stitching line and cutting line.
*Smocking
Decorative technique of gathering done on fabric.
*Stylist
A person who coordinates clothes, jewellery and accessories.
*Trims
Trims are decorative additions.
*Tucks
Tucks are stitched fold of fabric.
*Vogue
Fashionable something that is trendy and very popular.
*Warp
Length wise yarn.
*Weft
Width wise yarn.
*Weaving
Interlacing of yarn.
*Yarn
Continuous twisted fibers.
